NIGERIA | CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF VMY – A JOURNEY OF FAITH AND SERVICE IN NIGERIA

It has been two decades since the establishment of the first Vincentian Marian Youth (VMY) group in Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in the history of evangelization. Over the course of 20 years, the spirit of Vincentian and Marian devotion has thrived within the heart of Nigeria, positively impacting the lives of numerous young individuals.

To commemorate this momentous occasion, the members of VMY Nigeria gathered at the Vincentian community in Ikot-Ekpene, Akwa-Ibom State, from 24-27 July 2023. This gathering provided a unique opportunity to celebrate their journey and reaffirm their commitment to their spiritual mission.

The event featured a series of spiritual talks and educational sessions, primarily focused on Vincentian spirituality, the importance of friendship and service, and the dangers of drug abuse among youth. These discussions aimed to strengthen the fundamental principles that VMY represents – selflesss service and unwavering faith.

One of the highlights of the celebration occurred on the evening of July 25th when the youth members of VMY consecrated themselves to the Marian spirit and made pledges to follow the virtuous life of the Virgin Mary. Following this sacred commitment, the participants were presented with Miraculous Medals as symbols of their dedication.

The culmination of the gathering was the third day, a day of jubilation. It commenced with an energetic mass featuring a lively choir and worship dances that filled the atmosphere with devotion and joy. Members from various branches of the Vincentian Family participated, making it a significant moment in the history of VMY.

After the Eucharist celebration, each local group presented a vibrant Nigerian cultural dance, further enhancing the festive atmosphere. It was a time of unity and shared happiness, strengthening the connections among VMY members.

I was honored to have the privilege of meeting the VMY Nigeria members and learning more about their mission. Despite the challenges faced in Nigeria, the presence of VMY brings joy and the Lord’s peace to the lives of the less fortunate.
