The VMY in Diouroup: Young People Serving the Poorest

In Diouroup, a small town in Senegal, the Vincentian Marian Youth (VMY) enthusiastically pursues its mission of love and service, inspired by the charism of Saint Vincent de Paul and the Virgin Mary.

Present for four years thanks to the community of the Daughters of Charity, the VMY in Diouroup has gradually established itself in parish and community life through various services rendered to the poorest: care for the sick, home visits, accompaniment of disabled children, support for the schooling of disadvantaged children, and adult literacy.

July 13th, 2024 marked an important milestone for the community with the official launch of the VMY Diouroup group, in the presence of the pastoral advisor of the Province. The group, composed of 12 young people and 2 advisors, meets for times of prayer, formation, and above all, service to the poor—the essence of Vincentian identity.

Despite a promising start, the group faces several challenges: many young people are already involved in other parish activities (choir, altar service, etc.) or take part in agricultural work, especially during the rainy season. These realities make it difficult to hold regular meetings. Nevertheless, motivation remains strong and the members plan to resume their activities in November, on the feast of the Miraculous Medal.

Led by Sister Georgette, the group’s advisor, the VMY in Diouroup continues to embody living faith and humble service within the community, sowing hope among young people and the poorest.
